Hello there, this is my first post and I'm not completely sure this is the right place for it but I'll give it a try.

I started playing S4 League this week and noticed some people move really f'ing fast. Kinda like dashing to the sides, when I asked how this was done I got MANY different answers:

- Someone said it was an item (orb) that you can get at lvl 15.
- Others said this is called wave dashing and that I should check youtube for it.

I decided to follow the latter advice and checked on YouTube and I found many videos, some of them show sidesteping + jump + side step ~and call that wave dashing,

I saw that and thought to myself... "maybe that is IT" it may look different to what I see other ppl do but that might just be the animation it adapts on my screen.

But then~ I saw this video:

The instructions are simple : Dash + Jump + Dash... Ok... but, how do I dash in the first place?

Cuz' there's a big diferent between dashing and side stepping (A/O + Space)

So if someone could just enlight me in this, I would really appreciate it (well, me and the friends I started playing this with~ we all have no idea how to dash)

Wave Dash is dodge + jump
A/D + Space > Space > A/D + Space > Space....etc etc

Again, I'm trying to break it down~

Ignore the 'jump' part... I want to get down the "dodge" or "dash" part~ that animation when he just slides in the floor. Cuz' that's not side stepping, is it?

A/D + Space.
It's that simple.

I don't know what you mean by side stepping. If you mean just moving left or right then yeah that isn't side stepping.
Dodging is when you press A and Space together or D and Space together.

Ok, maybe i'm not explaining myself correctly. I posted two videos. In the first one you see how he pressed A+Space or D+space and you see him 'jumping' or 'dodging' to the side.

But on the second video the animation is totally different.

I'm not going to look through that whole 9 minute video, but I can only assume it's the male and female dash animation differences. Are the both moving to the side, then jumping? Then they're both wavedashing. (A/D + Space > Space > A/D + Space)

I'm sure you explained yourself adequately.
Maybe it was just our answers that are inadequate.

Wave Dash is a dodge and a jump, and then you just chain them together.
As Extratone mentioned above, female and male dodge animations are different.
The female one does a no-hand cartwheel while the male one slides along the ground.
Both of them are dodges however.

Don't need to check the whole video, go to like 7:20 and you will see him 'dodging'

7:20

On the second video, he shows what I'm talking about pretty much in the first 20 seconds.

Edit~ Just read Chauy's last reply. Ok then I'll go try with a male character now, thanks!

In that video what he is doing is spamming his spacebar.
If you time spacebar correctly in the middle of your dodge you can cancel it, which lets you do another action.
By another action I mean that you can dodge again or even start sprinting.
If you don't do anything you will just drop down to the ground.

The reason why it looks different is because he's canceling his dodge and then dodging a second time in midair.

It is NOT something I recommend a newbie doing, because if used incorrectly it will eat away at your SP (which you need to dodge and do jumps). Pretty much if you're unfamiliar with S4 and you try to dodge cancel you'll end up getting yourself killed due to lack of SP.

A wave dash is a dodge and a jump.
That's all it is.

I don't see a difference between the two other than the male/female animation.
The second video provides the person starting off slowly, and then accelerating over the span of a few seconds.
Regardless of what you see, the simple essence of it is dodge + jump + rinse and repeat.

"If in doubt, ASK!" - My English teacher
-Cringe-
IT'S THE END OF THE SEMESTER SO I WON'T SEE HIM EVER AGAIN
EFF YEAH

To avoid thread derailment though, it wasn't stupid of you to think the animation would be the same.
As you're a new player, you might want to start off with the essential basics of the game.
Learn from the various guides on this forum, too - they're all very helpful.
Wave dash, to the S4 community, is part of something known as egS (Evasive Gun Style).
Simply put, they help you to dodge an opponent's bullets effectively while returning fire.
Here's a guide on them - it's very lengthy, but Ctrl+F is your friend.
http://forums.chs5.n...s-formal-guide/

However, don't touch up too much on this technical stuff too early - as you play more games,
you pick off experience and increased game sense and awareness.
Learning about something like egS before basic game fundamentals is like
learning how to dance without following proper warm up procedures.

wave dash is a repeating technique to avoid geting hit.
now the G caps and I caps give you alil bit more speed.
once you get completely used to the game everyone wont look as fast the first time you played.

^Yeah, S4 League is a lot more action-packed and active than typical shooting games.
I remember when I first played, the wall jump was the coolest thing ever... loool
I was like, "OH GAWD HOW TEW SHEWT WALL JUMPER"
But the point is, you get used to it.

it's a bit tricky to handle, but i'll try and give my breakdown to see if gives any help.

Dashing/feinting/whatever is the dodge animation that's activated by pressing A or D and THEN pressing space.

when moving forwards, backwards or in a diagonal motion, dashing doesn't occur when pressing space after. ONLY when moving completely sideways using only A or D with SPACE is when you can dash.

how wave stepping occurs is initiating a dash, THEN moving in a diagonal or vertical motion and jump again to cancel the last animation, and while in that process of moving diagonal or vertical, do another dash while in mid air.

so the sequence is as follows: A or D + space (dashing) ---> D+A(diagonal movement) + space ---> (while in mid air) A or D + space (dashing)

Word Process: Dash sideways, jump in a diagonal or vertical direction from the dash, while in mid air, dash again sideways

EDIT:: please excuse spelling errors if i missed any

I personally think working on your aim is better than trying to perfect a wave dash. So you gun down all the dodge spamming runners rendering the wave dash useless.

not necessarily, movement is pretty important for any beginner. A new player should just work on basic movement like the wave dash and dabble in a few basic jumps on some of the TD and DM maps to help them move around better. Aim can come later, after the new player finds out what kind of weapons they want to use for their main set.

Your aim should come around the time you've tried out every weapon. By that time you should have a main set that you can work with. Look at a few matches on youtube and a few guides to see how you can be effective.

Basic movement should always come first, aim second, advance movement last. Then of course refining both.
