I've got to ask. How do you guys keep order in your library. I'm terrible with this sort of thing, so my books have pretty much no order. My dad has personal library with over 2k+ books (ignoring collector's books, yeah, he has an entire bookcase dedicated to dime novels/pocket books) and I swear he has the most obnoxious method ever developed (I can find the Illiad and Odyssey in one shelf, but have to cross the house to find Oedipus Rex and enter a different room for Lysistrata). At the same time there's some method (with a catalog!) to it, so I have to give him credit.

How do you guys manage all of your books?

My books are not organized. I have some books in my office, others in bookcases at my parents' but there's still a bunch all over my room and floor. I have nowhere near 2000 books though. Probably not even a 100.

my shelves are stupid and I have more books than shelves so I have to double up :\ Means I end up with whole rows of books behind rows which makes actually getting a specific book out a bit of a chore if it's in the back row.

Have a pretty specific memory wrt books though so I group them according to whatever I associate them with (ie books with similar stories, with similar characters/plot devices/themes, etc etc. Sometimes it's just specific passages or phrases that stand out to me but I have enough books that I can usually form a grouping based on that alone)

Honestly doubt my (fairly idiosyncratic) system makes sense to anyone else or will help though. Especially not if you're looking at 2k books.

The books I read for school I just place wherever when I'm done. The books I bought for myself, I put somewhere, but not wherever. There's a difference, believe it or not.

A bunch of foldout bookcases like this in a hallway.
Organized by genre in a general area, and then by author.

Or at least that how my sister does it ;D

Half of my closet contains a shelf made out of an old bedframe of about 60 books all sorted by colour. I colour coordinate everything in my bedroom in order to organize them.

That I would to see XD
Feels good to know I'm not the only with sad organization. How Slow could put up with the doubled shelves though... that's beyond my comprehension >.<

Half the people on this board must really hate school reads... There should be a count for how many times people suggest burning books here >.>

I don't see how you made that jump in logic. I burn books, therefore I hate them? Do you only cremate those you hate?

I barely have any books that are ordinary novel books. But I have my Science textbooks ordered from volumes 1 - 28. |D

Otherwise, my books are just ordered from authors last name. Just like libraries have them ordered in.

This is what I get for bunching people up ><
I hate corpses, but I like fire. Maybe this is a good storage tactic for things I hate. Why you burn something you like is beyond me. Are you a cultist by chance? I must admit, succubus and incubus have inspired me...

28 volumes!? Is this some sort of encyclopedia/reference collection, or did you actually have classes that mean?
The libraries I went to all used some sort of doodoo decimal system that more or less irritated the crap out of me. It's annoying hopping between three sections to find books on what is more or less the same subject matter.

Partially broken bookshelf, boxes, random surfaces.

I have something like 12 books just scattered about my room.
