You will just have to talk in person to get to the bottom of this because breaking up over the chat message in skype is beyond lame. He might have just gone whack with jealousy; I don't know. At least try to get some closure. It seems you two need to discuss the main points that you listed: you both are getting busy preparing for the future, and you feel that you two should be comfortable enough to endure some distance. Even if you cannot physically meet, there's always the webcam, text, and phone call option to get you guys by.
